Chris Is Highly Commended For His Great Spirit!

Published 4th August 2006

Chris Houlding, an apprentice at Spirit Data Capture Limited, was nominated recently by Warrington Collegiate for one of the Learning and Skills Council’s 2006 Apprenticeship Awards. Chris, who has Asperger’s Syndrome and dyslexia, was commended in the Personal Achiever of the Year category.

The Apprenticeship Awards are sponsored by City & Guilds. The Personal Achiever of the Year Award is presented to the apprentice who has overcome personal or work difficulties to achieve their goals, and has exceeded all expectations.

Warrington Collegiate nominated Chris because of his excellent academic achievements and his success in his work with Spirit despite his personal difficulties. Chris is 18 and has been self-taught for most of his life. His first experience of formal education was when he joined Warrington Collegiate at the age of 15.

As one of the top 100 entrants in his category, Chris was invited to the Apprenticeship Awards ceremony at London’s Hilton Hotel in June. The event included a three course meal, followed by the presentation of the awards by television newsreader, Natasha Kaplinski, and Top Gear presenter, Richard Hammond.

Chris says: “It was a great experience, and one I will never forget.. I am now studying for an HNC in Electronic and Electrical Engineering on day release from Spirit, and have also approached the Collegiate about doing a Level 3 NVQ in Electronics. I am thoroughly enjoying my time at Spirit – they are a very friendly and professional bunch of people.”

Ebbie Khadem, Managing Director of Spirit Data Capture Limited, says: “Chris has shown real commitment and determination in his drive to succeed despite the odds. He is an asset to the company, and we are delighted that his achievements have been recognised by this commendation from the Apprenticeship Awards.”
